Troubleshooting A Pace Edwards Retractable Tonneau Cover That Isn't Properly Opening And Closing

Updated 03/27/2025 | Published 01/07/2023

Question:

I have a pace Edwards remote controlled bed cover on my truck I just bought. When either covering or uncovering the unit is slitting on what sounds to me as a gear or sprocket. I help it along by pulling it closed. Is there a way to adjust this and make it not slip. Thank u.

Typically if a Pace Edwards Retractable Tonneau Cover like the # 311-M-BLFA18A44 is getting hung up it's with the railing and would require lubrication. The canister is a closed system so there isn't a good way to get into it and see if the gears are wearing and fix them without fully pulling it apart, which will likely void any warranty you have.

I recommend first lubing the rails with some dry silicone # RM-747 just to see if maybe the cover is getting stuck somewhere in the railing and making the gears stick or wear down and slip. If that doesn't fix the issue then I'd reach out to Pace Edwards for a warranty claim if possible.

I have a 2005 cover that I do not have a remote for and we replaced the tailgate and can't get it open, is there a way to open the cover or do I need to cut it? Please help with a solution. Thank you

@Randall Without being able to open the tailgate there's not going to a way to manually open the cover. Is the cover potentially placing to much pressure against the tailgate and not allowing it to open? If so you can take a large pry bar and slide it between the weather-stripping on the cover and the tailgate and pry up on the cove to try and relieve some pressure and get the tailgate down. I wouldn't pry too hard though because you could end up braking the latch that locks the cover in place.

@Randall To program your remote you would need to complete the following steps: 1. Disconnect the power to the Bedlocker unit. (This can either be done at the battery or at the canister where the wires come out) 2. Reconnect the power and immediately push the open button on both remote key fobs. 3. Wait 15 seconds after pushing the buttons and try to operate the unit. (It should operate normally at this time) The Electornics box goes into program mode for 2-3 seconds once power is reconnected. If power is lost to your truck and the buttons are not programmed within 3 seconds of power being restored everything should stay as it was. If you find this not to be the case please try reprogramming it as above.

Hello, I have the Pace Edwards retractable tonneau cover on a used truck I bought last fall. I have both fobs and the cover opened and closed fine last fall but now that winter is over I only hear a click when I press open or close. It doesn't even try to move. I traced the power wires to the battery and checked all the fuses, everything looked great. When I pull the release lever I can open and close the cover but want to get it back working properly. Thank you

@Michael How old is the truck? About 15 years ago or so they had issues with the brakes locking up on their covers and only solution was to remove the three screws on the motor to release it.

@JamesonC 2022. The tonneau is a couple years old. The cover moves fine when I pull the release lever, so I don't think the brake is locked up. It just stopped working. You can hear a little click sound when using the fob but the motor doesn't budge or make any sound. I'm going to check the voltage at the motor tomorrow to make sure it's getting enough, just seems like something has stopped working, but can't get in for a look without drilling out all the rivets, etc.

@Michael yeah I wouldn't assume it's the problem I mentioned then. The motors can go bad but hopefully it's just wiring.
