Is this for making the awning longer like to cover more surface area or is it supposed to be used like the sides of a tent?

The answer is yes, the Tapered Extension # RR27RW for Batwing Awnings # RR33100 and # RR33200 can be used to cover more surface area or as sides to the initial awning so it essentially turns into a large tent covering.
