Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2009 Hyundai Sonata

Published 11/20/2013

Question:

Hi! Im very new to car installations in general and had a few questions regarding your trailer hitch part. I wish to install a bike rack on my car, so I would need to order this part, as well as the drawbar, pin and clip, such as part 3592, as well as the actual bike rack, correct? Also, will this trailer hitch part also fit both the 4cyl version and the V6? Thank you for your time and help.

The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24757 fits all models of the 2009 Hyundai Sonata. To use this hitch with a bike rack, you will not need the ball mount, pin, or clip. You just need the hitch and a compatible bike rack. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you.

This is a Class I trailer hitch so you have to use a bike rack that is Class I compatible and you will be limited to carrying 2 bikes at most. The reason is because the weight of additional bikes will be too far from the receiver and will produce too much torque on the hitch. This can damage the hitch and vehicle.

For a compatible bike rack I recommend the Swagman Trailhead, # S63360. It is Class I compatible, can tilt down, has anti-sway cradles, and the rise in the shank provides better ground clearance. The hitch pin is included. I have linked a video review of this rack for you.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical mens bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wifes bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my sons bike at all. I have included a link to a video showing how the adapter works.
