How To Fix Dash Warning Lights On 2022 BMW X5 with Plug-In Hitch Accessory

Question:

I have a new BMW X5 with a factory installed trailer hitch. I purchased an after market hitch step that has built in turn/brake leds in it. When I plug it it to the factory 4-plug flat connector, it a puts the suv in trailer mode which changes a lot of the suv drive settings and b also causes a check engine light for a tail light fault. If I use this kit to add another trailer connector, will that not cause the fault and or put the suv in trailer mode?

The Curt Powered Tail Light Converter Kit part # C56190KIT which is a fit for a 2022 BMW X5 won't cause any warning lights on the dash when using a hitch accessory with built-in lights. The harness does not communicate with the vehicle in that respect so there will be no issues. This is a standalone unit that will provide its own trailer lighting signals using the vehicle's taillights.
