Question:
what is a good replacement cooler for a 1987 f-250 4x4 with c-6 tranny

Expert Reply:
Transmission and oil coolers are not vehicle-specific so you can use the largest one that will fit in the available space you have to mount it. You can start by measuring the available mounting space within the engine compartment and then select the largest cooler that will fit. An aftermarket cooler is a great way to provide supplementary cooling in addition to that provided by the OEM cooler in the radiator. The Derale # D13504 you referenced is a high-efficiency Class IV plate-fin type cooler that will do a great job of providing additional cooling.
I have included a link to our main page for transmission coolers; at the top in the Select Vehicle Style drop-down menu you can select the engine type in your F-250 to see a range of coolers. Again, coolers themselves are not vehicle-specific so you can pick the largest one that will fit. I have also provided two helpful articles that cover much about cooler types and their installation. The preferred location is in front of the AC condenser. The linked video shows a representative cooler installation.
If your C6 transmission uses 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch NPT trans-line type fittings you will need hose fitting kit # D13014; if it uses 1/2-inch-20 partial thread fittings you can use kit # D13024.
