Trailer Brakes Not Strong Enough To Stop Trailer

Question:

I have a 19’ ram with factory break controller. Gain of 0-10. I have 11.8 volts at truck plug and 11.7 volts at the axle when not connected to magnets. When I connect the break magnets it s to 6.2ish. I have two axles but just one with brakes. I have bypassed breakaway controller just to try to find the problem without to many other things that could mess with the readings. After adjusting brakes to where they barely rub and assembling everything back together I then hit the brakes and the wheels stop. At this point is where the problem is. With gain at 10 and manually pressing controller the trailer brakes still do not have enough pressure to stop truck. What is wrong? If I advise the brakes even tighter I can not even pull the hub off without loosening the adjuster first

Since you mentioned you already tried adjusting your brakes and that did not seem to help, it may be time for new shoes. If enough of the pad has been worn away, they may not be bale to adjust out far enough to make good contact with the drum.

If your brakes are adjusted properly, you should hear a slight drag on the pads when the wheel is turned.

It could also be that your brake controller isn't putting out enough voltage. I recommend checking the voltage while the manual override is being engaged, and is set to full. While engaged, this should be reading 12 volts. You can use a multimeter like # PT89ZR to assist you in troubleshooting.

If your brake controller isn't reading the correct voltage, this could indicate that your brake controller is faulty and would likely need to be replaced.

Finally, there may also be an issue with your brake magnets. Inspect your magnets to see if the copper windings are coming through, if they are they will need to be replaced, and could be the source of the issue.
