Switching From LT225/75-16 Tires To ST235/85R16 Trailer Tires On a Horse Trailer

Published 03/25/2022

Question:

I currently have a 4 horse gooseneck trailer with LT225-75-16 tires on it. These are the tires stated on the data tag. I am looking to raise the trailer an inch or so and saw that 235-85-16 tires are 31.7inch in diameter vs 29.3. Do you recommend another size that is compatible? Also can I change to an ST tire instead of the LT?

The Westlake ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # LHWL410 is a good choice for your gooseneck trailer. The tire is 31.7" tall so you will gain 1.2" of height over the LT225/75-16 tires you are currently using. Be sure to verify that you have the additional clearance for the larger diameter tires and will also not have any clearance issues for the width since the new tire is also slightly wider(1/2"). I recommend having at least 4-1/4" vertical clearance over your current tires to account for the added height of the new tires. Also be sure that there is at least 4-1/2" between the tandem tires to ensure that the tires do not rub each other. You will want to ensure that your current sidewalls have at least 1-1/4" of clearance as well.
