Question:
I will be purchasing an Electra Townie Go! 7D step Thru e-bike and I have a 2018 Mercedes E-300. I am looking for a bike rack. Do I need a trailer hitch. This bike weighs about 48 pounds. Is there something that can help lift the bike up on the rack as I have a bad back. Thank you!

For a heavier bike like that you'll definitely need a trailer hitch, especially if you have a bad back. For a trailer hitch that fits your 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300 we have the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11454 which is a Class I hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver so that does limit our options.
For your application I recommend using the Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes # TH903202 as it fits the Class I hitch, comes with a ramp for easier loading/unloading, and it folds up like a suitcase with wheels to make it MUCH easier to maneuver around over carrying a heavy rack. This does have a higher price-point but it's the only rack that meets your needs on every level.
Attached is a review video for you to check out.
