Clearance Differences Between Trailer Tire Sizes 8x14.5 and 235/80-16

Updated 03/22/2022 | Published 03/18/2022

Question:

I have a trailer that is 8ft wide with a 77.25 wide frame. It has mobile home axles that measure 89/74 and have 8x14.5 tires but I want to do away with those for 7k axles. My question is if I go to 8 lug and 235/80/16 and a 89/74 dexter axle will I have enough clearance between tire and the frame? And with that sit up how wide would I be from outside to outside with tires mounted

Expert Reply:

We recommend to have at least 2 inches of clearance from the tire to the trailer frame and 3 to 4 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to fender to accommodate for suspension travel. So to go from the size you have now of 8x14.5 to the 235/80-16 like the # TA26FR you'd lose about 3/4 of an inch of inner clearance between the tire and the frame and then in vertical clearance 2 inches. This setup would also stick out about 1-1/4 inches further than what you have now.
