How to Make an Adapter to go From a 4-way Flat Vehicle to a Separate 6-Way Round Trailer

Updated 08/05/2013 | Published 08/03/2013

Question:

Hi, My trailer wiring diagram states my 6 plug round male plug needs an adapter utilizing all 5 outer circle plugs. 1-lights 2-left turn 3-right turn 4 brake lights 5-ground, center- back-up lights. I need an adapter for a flat 4 prong plug. I do not need the back-up lights center plug. My vehicle is a 2000 Volkswagen Winnebago Rialta Motor Home.

So it sounds like your trailer has separate circuit tail light harness meaning the brake lights are separate from your turn signals and your motorhome has a combined circuit 4-way.

I believe the easiest way to accomplish towing this setup would be to wire up a tail light converter like the Curt adapter # C56196 to separate your tow vehicles tail light signal.

The method I will recommend for this will basically give you an adapter to allow your trailer to be towed by motorhome, but then if you want to tow a different trailer with just a 4-way you could just simply not use the adapter.

First thing you need is to take a trailer side 4-way like the Hopkins Endurance 4-Way Flat Trailer Connector # HM48110 and then wire it by function to the # C56196. You would be able to just match up the colors from the # HM48110 to the input side of the # C56196.

Now from the output side of the # C56196 you will want to wire in a Bargman 6-Way # 50-86-007. Since your 6-way seems to be wired differently than standard you will want to wire the connector up by function to match the 6-way of your trailer.
