Can The Saris Glide EX 4 Bike Rack Be Used With A Class I Trailer Hitch On A 2021 Mazda CX-5

Published 02/02/2022

Question:

My 2021 Mazda CX-5 had a Class I hitch installed. I really like the 4 bike racks that fold down fully loaded. What would happen if I put the Glide EX 4 on a class I hitch? Is the concern that it would bend the receiver or rack? Thanks

The Saris EX 4 # SA774 is designed to be used with class II trailer hitches, so unfortunately, this will not work for your class I trailer hitch on your 2021 Mazda CX-5. The shank on class II hitch mounted accessories is longer, and will not physically fit into class I trailer hitches to prevent you from overloading your hitch.

With you having a class I trailer hitch installed, you will be unable to carry 4 bikes at once because it will likely overload your hitch.

With that being said, I recommend the

-Thule Hitching Post Pro Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # TH934XTR

This is tilting bike rack which will give you access to your rear hatch when folded down, and can carry 2 bikes, for a 70-lbs total capacity.

If you were to use a class III hitch like # C13315, then you'd have plenty of capacity to be able to carry all 4 bikes.
