Actually, the Brake Buddy # HM39524 Select 3 Portable Braking system you'd looked at would be independent of the tow vehicle. It won't need air from the tow vehicle. When installed, it will need a connection from the electrical umbilical to get a trickle charge from the battery of the tow vehicle to keep it topped off, which is typical. This prevents the towed vehicle battery from getting discharged during travel.
Other than the remote control unit that you'd have in the cab of the tow vehicle which would allow you to toggle between proportional and full braking mode and adjust the brake sensitivity, the unit would be fully contained in your Jeep Grand Cherokee. The unit installs and removes pretty quickly after the initial battery connection is made and can be easily swapped to a different vehicle later if you decide to replace the vehicle you're towing in the future.
I've linked to a demonstration video that explains how the system works.
In addition to the supplemental braking system, you'll need a few other parts if you don't have them already. I'll make a few suggestions below:
• A tow bar like the Roadmaster Falcon All-Terrain, part # RM-522
• Base Plates # 1427-3 which fits all but SRT-8 or models with a brush guard
• Taillight Wiring Kit like # RM-15267
• Brake Light Relay kit, part # RM-88400
I've linked to some installation and demonstration videos for the parts I mentioned.
