Troubleshooting Curt Trailer Brake Controller Coming On Immediately When Brakes are Pushed

Published 11/18/2021

Question:

Bought my curt brake control system and used it for about 4 months with no issues at all. Now when pressing the brake it brakes all at once instead of gradually brakeing to the limit I have set. Before this issue when pressing the brake it would show on its small display the brake force gradually going higher and higher. But now when pressing the brake it immediately goes to the set limit causing the truck to jolt more.

Your Curt brake controller may have had the sensitivity adjusted to the maximum setting without you knowing. If the sensitivity is increased to maximum it may cause the issue that you are having. On a Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller # C24VV this adjustment is made with the switch on the back left of the brake controller. When you adjust the sensitivity it has a range of L1 to L9 with L9 being the most aggressive activation.

If the sensitivity and output are set at their correct settings and you are still getting the immediate braking be sure to verify the mounting angle for you brake controller. Some proportional brake controllers are sensitive to the amount of angle on the controller. If that changed between now and the installation that could also explain the issue.

If everything is correct with these settings and the installation angle is correct it will likely be a defective controller. If you purchased the controller through us please reach out to our customer service team who will be able to help you with the warranty process.
