Question:
My safety chains have a wire that is winds around through the chains with a loose loop not connected to anything at one end. The other end of the wire is secured to the hitch with a rubber plug. I dont see that on the new chains you have. What is that wire for? There is a rusted area in the middle, that has a crack in the actual wire. The covering is like reinforcement around the actual wire. If that is important. Where do I go to replace that wire? And where does the loose end loop go?

I think what you are looking at is the breakaway wire and that should be independent, not weaved through the safety chain. If you need a replacement, please identify what manufacturer you have that I may provide you the best recommendation. If you have a Hopkins, you will need the Replacement Cable and Pin for Hopkins Breakaway Kits, # HM20012. Another commonly used is the Dexter Trailer Breakaway, # K71-691. If you have something other than one of these two manufacturers, please let me know.
