How To Choose the Correct Replacement Gas Strut for a Storage Compartment

Updated 08/09/2021 | Published 08/07/2021

Question:

I am trying to retrofit a pair of gas strut for two long narrow rod locker hatches. Do you have OEM information for Tracker Mako boats? I own a 2019 Mako 19 CPX. The gas struts were discontinued after 2015. Tracker is not providing part information to its service centers without a 2015 hull number. My best guess is a 15inch 20lb. stainless. I dont think the hatch weighs more than 20lbs itself. Does more force need to be applied due to the pivot point closer to the hinge? Am I on the right track? Thanks

In order to find the correct replacement gas strut you'll need to know the force in lbs. and length. The length is taken from the center of the top and bottom socket while unloaded. The force should be stamped onto the outer sleeve. This is relative to the weight of the door/hatch. The Taylor Made Marine Gas Strut for Boat Hatches part # 3691835-10 has a 10 lb force and measures 20" long. The closer you are to the listed force, the smoother the strut will operate. I wouldn't have this information for any boat/trailer so you'll need to find these yourself.

I have attached our selection below.
