How does Thule Fit Kit Attach to a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Flush Rails

Updated 07/20/2021 | Published 07/18/2021

Question:

Found three questions in your FAQ asking this... none of them clearly state the answer: Does the bracket hook to something? For the factory flush rails, there is NOT an inside flange on the side of the rail that the hooked on the metal bracket faces. There is nothing for it to hook onto. Connor Ls answer is impossible. I have installed it to wear the hookfoot is not a hook at all, but a foot that rests on the bottom of the factory channel, opposing the force of the bolt into the roof. Seems super secure, but nowhere is it explicitly stated that this is proper installation. Can you confirm? Thanks!

Sometimes, neighbors get confused about the fitguide selections about whether they have solid matte black flush rails, matte black and gloss black flush rails, or black and chrome flush rails on their 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Thule setup that uses Fit Kit for Thule Podium-Style Roof Rack Feet - 3142 # THKIT3142 are designed only to fit the black/chrome flush rails and the matte black/gloss black flush rails. If you solid matte black flush rails, this fit kit will not your Grand Cherokee, and Thule unfortunately does not have a system that will. In the attached videos I linked the fit kit being used with the proper chrome/black flush rails as well as matte black/gloss black flush rails on Jeep Grand Cherokees. As you can see, the fit kit mounts directly onto the rails without any hooks.

With that being said, Yakima does make a similar system that will fit if you have solid matte black flush rails on your vehicle. For that route, I recommend the following parts:

- Yakima JetStream Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 60" Long - Qty 2 # Y00426
- BaseLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars - Naked Roofs - Qty 4 # Y28TR
- BaseClip Fit Kit for Yakima BaseLine Roof Rack Towers - Qty 4 # Y06121
- Yakima Same-Key Lock Cores # Y07204

With this setup, you will have 165 pounds of maximum weight capacity. As with all roof rack systems, I recommend that you confirm with your vehicle's user's manual to make sure your roof can hold that much weight.
