Troubleshooting a Prodigy P2 Brake Controller that Turns On Brake Lights when Plugged In

Question:
I have 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Quad cab with factory installed tow package. I have Prodigy 2 brake controller. When I plug in the brake controller, the brake lights on the Dodge light up. When I hook up the travel trailer, there are brake lights on the trailer. , The pickup brake lights are still on when I hook up the trailer. The trailer brakes do not work. I am thinking this may be a connection issue rather than problems with the controller. Your thoughts please. Thanks

To me it sounds like the 12 volt power circuit for the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 is shorted out to the stop light switch circuit which is putting power on your brake lights and activating them.
I would go over the wiring of the controller looking for any shorts or exposed wires and fix them as necessary. From the brake controller the black wire is the 12 volt power source, the blue wire is the brake output circuit, the white is ground and the red is the stop light switch.
I attached an FAQ article on troubleshooting brake controllers for you to check out also.
