Besides the obvious answer, what is the difference between the 18k and 21k? Can the 18k be modified to achieve 21k rating by changing out parts? If so, can you tell me what part numbers I would need?

The only difference between the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 18k # DM8550024 and the 21k # DM8550037 is the base assembly.
Both use the same head, but the base is what gives each hitch its rating. To change the 18k to 21k you would need the 21k base and head assembly # DM6107 and the reuse the side brackets for mounting to your 5th wheel rails. The base is not available by itself.
