Why are Weight Distribution Systems so Noisy

Updated 04/28/2021 | Published 04/24/2021

Question:

Hi, I have the Reese friction pad type, weight distribution hitch. I get terrible noise every time I turn from the steel bars rubbing on the friction pads. I am planning on replacing these pads with something with less friction smoother material I tow an Airstream and never had a sway problems. Do they have something to deal with this noise issue? Pads made of different material? Have you heard of this problem before? Thanks,

Due to the amount of tension in a weight distribution system and the fact the components have to move around under that tension there will always be a bit of noise with any system. Now the friction sway control units have even more noise since they parts are rubbing on each other intentionally under that same tension. This creates even more noise. And unfortunately any attempts to remove some of that tension like lubrication or slicker materials will just make the sway control less effective.

Which if you don't need the sway control like you mentioned maybe that wouldn't be a big deal.
