The forward edge of the step platform on the HitchMate Extendable TruckStep for 2-inch Hitches, part # HE4045, will extend 23-1/2 inches beyond the end of the hitch receiver.
You can determine exactly where the 9-inch-wide x 6-inch-deep step will be relative to the edge of your open tailgate by measuring 23-1/2 inches back from your hitch receiver. Since this is the point where the front edge of the step will be, the rear edge of the step will reach back an additional 6 inches behind that point, or 29-1/2 inches from the edge of the hitch receiver.
I pulled a sample of this item from our warehouse in order to get you one additional measurement not shown on the product page. When the step is in its storage position (strut fully inserted and the step folded up) the unit will extend out from the edge of your hitch receiver only 3 inches. Please refer to the attached photo.
I have included a link to a video for this product that shows how it installs in the receiver, extends out and locks into position, and folds up when not in use.
