what is the proper way to check my travel trailer battery?

Do you mean to check to see if it's charged properly for a camping trip? If you have access to a voltmeter you could check to make sure it's at or near 12 volts.
For a charger that has a maintainer that you could leave on the battery at all times the CTEK part # CTEK56353 would ensure that your battery is always topped off and ready to go.
