Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2012 Mazda 5 and Class I Trailer Hitch

Updated 01/03/2013 | Published 01/02/2013

Question:

I would like to add a rear bike rack to my 2012 Mazda 5 van. I like the looks of this hitch. What I would like to know is if there is a good selection of bike racks that can attach to this hitch? Do you sell them too?

The Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24874 is a Class I trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver. Because it is a Class I hitch, you are limited to certain bike racks and a maximum of 2 bikes because a Class I trailer hitch cannot support the added stress of additional bikes.

With that said there are still a number of bike rack options that are compatible. I have included a link to all of the Class I compatible bike racks for you to view. Please note that some can hold more than 2 bikes but on a Class I hitch you are still limited to just 2 bikes.

I recommend a rack with a straight shank because the hitch receiver will be several inches forward of the rear bumper once installed. This means you need a rack with enough clearance to clear the bumper. Kuat Beta Bike Rack # B202-2, has a straight shank and measures 10 1/2" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across I recommend using an adapter bar, # 64005, to be able to carry those bikes more level and provide better ground clearance. I have linked a video that shows how it works.
