Question:

Hi, I have a 2017 Ram 3500 regular cab, dual rear wheel, 4x4, and an 8 foot bed. I am looking for a recommendations for a ladder rack and tonneau cover. I currently do not have either yet. For the tonneau cover, I would like something strong-secure, non-electric that maximizes bed space. I live on a rough dirt road and while I dont drive fast, the road is bumpy. Also dust and dirt is a consideration with the tonneau cover. I would like something that would still function if it was dusty or dirty. Ive been looking at the cannister type covers-retrax and pace edwards that have models that accomodate ladder racks, though have concerns that they will not stand up to our road and dust and still function. Also, the bak revolver reviews mention peeling of the vinyl from the aluminum substrate, especially in hot climates. For the ladder rack, I would prefer one that is removable, is heavy duty. My uses for the ladder rack would be for 20 foot section of pvc pipe, carrying lumber and plywood mostly, though at other times would carry other items. Do you think a 2 bar over the bed ladder rack is sufficient for carrying the 20 foot sections of pvc pipe? I know there would be some flex in the pipe and do not want to hit the roof of my cab. I also have the cab clearance lights. Thanks for your time

The best ladder rack and tonneau cover combo we offer for a 2017 Ram 3500 with 8' bed is the Thule TracRac SR Sliding Truck Bed Ladder Rack part # TH43003XT-000EX with BAK Revolver X4 Hard Tonneau Cover part # BAK74ZR. The cantilever extension is really a must for hauling long items such as lumber or plumbing pipes as they would likely be bouncing up and down on the cab otherwise. There should be no issues with the cab lights. In regards to the tonneau, this is really one of the most durable options we have. I spoke with Bak about this issue and they stated this is most likely caused by incorrect maintenance such as the use of wax or silicone cleaners on the vinyl. They recommend using a the 303 brand multi-surface cleaner to prevent any such issues.

Please note, there really are very few tonneau cover and ladder rack combos to choose from and I think the above is the best option for durability and hauling longer items.
