I am curious if I can mount a Thule Hideaway 8.5x6.5 on the side of my R-pod 172? If yes, are there things I would need to be careful of? Thank you,

The correct Thule Hideaway awning for attaching to the side of a camper like your R-Pod 172 would be the part # TH490018 as this is the direct mount version that you'd use for the side of a camper like yours. There isn't anything you'd really need to be careful of. Just follow the install instructions and take your time and you'll be totally fine.
