Question:
Hello: Im researching putting a hitch on my car to tow a small scooter 330 lbs. Two issues: The owners manual does not recommend a hitch to be installed, and #2, with the appearance package, i have a rear diffuser piece that may or may not make it difficult to install the equipment. Id appreciate your thoughts and recommendations

There are two trailer hitch options for a 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback, the Draw-Tite Sport Frame Receiver Hitch part # 24914 and EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 306-X7305. If you have the appearance/aero package then the Draw-Tite will be your best option since it sits below the bumper but the EcoHitch option will work as well there would just be more trimming of the rear bumper fascia involved. That said, the EcoHitch option has the 2" receiver tube opening which is best for towing or hitch mounted carriers when compared to the 1-1/4" receiver tube opening on the Draw-Tite option.
In regards to the owner's manual, I cannot go against this and tell you to do something they say not to but what I can tell you is that both EcoHitch and Draw-Tite designed and tested a trailer hitch specifically for this vehicle. I was also only able to find that it is not recommended to tow but not that you cannot install a trailer hitch.
