For your 2020 Subaru Crosstrek I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118467. It gives you all the required lights you need to tow a trailer safely down the road, tail lights, turn signals and brake lights.
I think the best part of the wiring is that there's no cutting or splicing at all, it simply plugs into a port in the rear hatch area of your Crosstrek. The floor coverings and a few panels will need to be removed and you can use a trim panel removal tool like # ALL648544. I do also recommend using Dielectric Grease # 11755, it's a good habit to put a small amount into any connection you make, or take apart to prevent moisture and corrosion build up. A small bit of prevention goes a long way.
I really like the Tekonsha kits, after installing countless trailer wiring kits I think they are the most durable, and seem to be the most reliable over time. The converter box in the wiring takes the signal from your Crosstrek and turns it into a working signal for your trailer. It is relatively small, it easily fits behind some of the trim panels needed to install the wiring; but it's filled with a potting or epoxy like material that protects all the internal components from vibration and seals the box.
The wiring is designed to live on the inside until you are ready to use it, then simply drape the 4 pole connector out the hatch and close it up. The weather stripping gives enough cushion so when you close the hatch it won't damage the wire, however a lot of people want to mount it by the hitch for easy access. That's a really easy option, I linked an install video of a similar year, and they show where and how they got the 4 pole to the hitch on the outside.
If you are going to mount it to the hitch on the outside, I recommend a bracket to keep your trailer connector from dragging the ground, and it just looks nicer in the end. You can use # 306-X6019, its a magnetic 4 pole bracket, so it will give you more options of how to mount it to the hitch.
