What Prevents the Thule Elite Van XT From Being Removed and Stolen
Published 01/02/2020 >
Question:
I have a couple questions. Could the rails be drilled and bolted onto a Sprinter ignoring standard installation? That way the rack couldnt be ripped off by thieves to steal a bike. Otherwise if its just glued on, locking a bike to the rack just means the rack needs to be pulled off with the bike to steal the bike. I understand if you cant suggest drilling it onto the door, but do you think its theoretically possible to do this? I think it would increase strength and decrease theft

The Thule Elite Van XT 2 Bike Rack for Sprinter Rear Door part # TH302043 is mainly secured via clips that clamp around the door. In order to remove these clips you would need to undo the allen head bolt which can be done from outside the vehicle yes but you would then need to open the door in order to release the clip. I have attached a photo to better show this. Therefore, the bike rack has a bit more security than you may think.
In theory, I supposed it is possible to drill the base rail on the Thule Elite Van XT 2 Bike Rack for Sprinter Rear Door part # TH302043 directly to the door. However, I cannot recommend this as you mentioned.
