What Are the Benefits Switching From a Class II to a Class III Trailer Hitch On a 2004 Ford Explorer

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer V8, it has factory tow pkg but it’s only a class 2 receiver. Would you recommend I change to a class 3 receiver?

Yes, I recommend you install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13550 which is class III rated on your 2004 Ford Explorer. The reason a class III trailer hitch will be much better than a class II trailer hitch is because you will be able to tow more with a class III hitch and you can use a weight distribution system if needed. I will say that even if you don't need to tow a heavy trailer it will still be better to have a higher safety margin.

If you won't be towing at all then a class III trailer hitch is still better as you will be able to choose from a much wider variety of hitch mounted accessories like bike racks, cargo baskets, load extenders etc. I have attached an install video for you which as you can see is very simple because it just fits underneath the factory class II trailer hitch.
