Towing Motorcycle Trailer with 2013 VW Beetle

Updated 06/23/2020 | Published 08/24/2019

Question:

The max load for this product is 1500lbs. and is for light duty. I was wondering if it safe and or recommended to use this product for motorcycle towing? My street bikes are around 400-430lbs. and u-haul motorcycle trailers are around 800lbs. so wont really exceed 1300lbs. Would this product be appropriate for this situation? Thanks,

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11260 features a 1,500 pound towing weight capacity, as you mentioned. As long as you stay under this number with the loaded weight of your trailer the hitch is absolutely up to the task.

The other area you will need to look at though is the towing capacity of your 2013 VW Beetle. You will always be limited by your setup's weakest component, so if your Beetle has a lower capacity than 1,500 pound this is the number you need to follow. This information can be found in your vehicle's owner's manual so I highly recommend verifying this.

If you find that your vehicle can handle your loaded motorcycle trailer then you will also need a trailer wiring harness. For this I highly recommend the Curt T-Connector # C56380, which will plug right into factory ports behind the driver and passenger side tail lights. After running the hot lead up to the Beetle's battery, you will have a fully functional 4-Way connector to connect with and power the trailer's signal lights.

Lastly you will need a ball mount like the Curt # C45521 and a hitch ball like the 1-7/8" # A-80 or the 2" # A-82, depending on what the coupler for your trailer accepts. I have attached a great article that explains how to choose the best ball mount for your setup if this particular option doesn't have the needed rise/drop to maintain a level trailer.

I have included a couple installation videos on the products mentioned that you can also check out.

When I bought my Beetle I had to sign a paper stating I would not tow with it. I believe the owners manual states no towing. Are you saying it is ok?

If you signed a paper at the dealer and your manual states that your Beetle cannot tow a trailer, then you shouldn't tow a trailer. I can't recommend going against that.
