Although I am not sure which brake controller you are referring to in your question, I am going to go out on a limb and say you have the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885 because it's troubleshooting codes include the N.C. display which means trailer not connected.
If the trailer connector does not have a proper connection with the vehicle's 7-way because of bent pins or corrosion on the pins then the brake controller does not sense that the trailer is connected to the tow vehicle. It is a good idea to inspect the pins of your 7-way connector for bents pins and any corrosion that can be gently sanded away with fine grit sandpaper.
It could also mean there is a short in your brake output wire from the brake controller back to the 7-way which is the blue wire. If you apply the manual override on the brake controller or depress the brake pedal of the towed vehicle and do not get power on the brake output pin of the 7-way then you know you know there is an issue with the brake output. If you cut the blue wire about 6 inches back from the brake controller and test with a circuit tester while activating the manual override you do not get power then the brake controller is bad. If you do get power when you press the manual override you know the issue is somewhere between the brake controller and the 7-way plug in that case you want to trace the blue wire back and check it for any damage or frayed wiring that may need to be replaced.
Finally, the N.C display could also mean you have a bad ground connection on your brake magnets. You want to make sure the brake assemblies are properly grounded to a clean bare metal surface for the best ground or the trailer's main ground. If you have a bad ground on the brake assemblies the brake controller will not sense the electric trailer brakes so it will think there's not a trailer connected. I would check the 7-way plug pins for a bad connection with the trailer connector before you test the brake controller though because that is usually the issue.
