Is it possible to use the baseplate with the crossbar detached? using just the baseplate and arms inserted and tow bar Sterling attached.

Roadmaster does offer direct connect style base plate kits that fit your 2013 Ford Flex like the part # RM-524435-5 but the part # RM-524435-4 does require you use the crossbar.
Either will work great with the Roadmaster Sterling part # RM-576 that you have without the included crossbar.
