Does Wheel Pilot Hole Diameter Matter for Lug-Centric Wheels
Updated 07/01/2019 | Published 06/28/2019 >
Question:
I have a 1994 Long Chih 4x8foot folding trailer, and I bought replacement wheels with tires. The original wheels have a 2 3/8inch axle hole and fit the axle closely. The new wheel set have 2 1/2inch axle holes. Question: Since lug nuts hold the wheel on, is the difference in the hole diameter a cause for concern? This trailer would not be driven over 45 MPH or long distances-inner city. It is rated at 1000 lbs. load minus wt. of the trailer. Thank you for your expert input.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The larger pilot hole diameter on your new trailer wheels # AM30090 is not a concern since your wheels are lug-centric, meaning they slide onto studs on the hub and are secured with lug nuts, like a car tire. If a wheel is hub-centric, meaning it centers on the hub and mounts with bolts, then the pilot hole size does matter.
