How Heavy of a 5th Wheel Trailer Can a 2011 Toyota Tundra Tow

Question:

A friend of mine has a 2011 Toyota Tundra pickup. He says it is a 3/4 ton. He purchased 2000 Montana 2850rk. I believe it weighs 8398 lbs. He towed it to the lake last week and his rear tires were compressed quite a bit. My concern is his truck is not enough to tow this trailer. Can you help??

The 2011 Toyota Tundra that your friend has is a 1/2 ton, not a 3/4 ton. However, this isn't really used for towing capacity anymore as there are multiple towing capacities listed for a single model based on engine size, cab configuration, bed length, gear ratio, etc. and they can vary drastically.

If you take a look starting at page 270 of the owner's manual for a 2011 Toyota Tundra, you will see the listed towing capacities. It looks like the most well equipped Tundra has a maximum towing capacity of 10,400 lbs but it can also be as as low as 4,500 lbs. The 2000 Keystone Montana M-2850 has a dry weight of 8,398 lbs therefore it is possible that the Tundra is equipped to tow it.

I will say that even if the Tundra is rated to tow the Montata, there is still a very good possibility that the truck will experience rear end sag/squat. The best way to combat this is with a set of suspension enhancements, the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TTORTUN4. These are relatively easy to install and will do a great job of taking out most of the rear end sag/squat. Please be sure that the tires are filled in accordance with the load chart in the driver door jamb.
