Is this adapter as efficient as connecting the solar panel to directly to the battery?

Yes, it is as efficient as long the 7-way trailer connector on the 2017 Ford Escape has power to the 12v pin on the connector. There is a power wire that runs from the trailer connector to the battery of the vehicle directly. The adapter part # 34270357 plugs directly into the 7-way plug so the adapter is basically powered directly from the battery of the vehicle.
