Question:
What trailer hitch. I spoke to Christy, e72TR, but online it says not to use e72TR, which is it ? is the wiring a plug in ? Or do you have to splice it? Does it come with detailed directions?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The etrailer hitch part # e72TR is the correct hitch for the 2017 Kia Sportage. We did install this hitch on a 2018 Kia Sportage SX GDI so it's confirmed to fit your Sportage.
I recommend Tekonsha part # 118698 for trailer wiring. The Tekonsha wiring harness is a t-connector that plugs in behind the driver's side and passenger's-side tail lights. It does not require splicing but does require a power wire that connects to the battery. The power wire powers the Modulite converter that is included with the harness to ensure the wiring does not overload the Kia's electrical system. I have attached a link for a help article about routing the power wire to the battery.
The wiring harness and hitch does include instructions. I have attached links for the installation instructions and installation videos of the hitch and wiring harness on a 2018 Kia Sportage SX GDI for you.
You need a ball mount if you plan on towing a trailer. I have attached an article to help you determine the amount of rise or drop that you need to tow level with the trailer. I recommend etrailer.com ball mount kit part # 989900 that includes 2 ball mounts. The first ball mount has a 3/4" rise or 2" drop and the second ball mount has a 2-3/4" rise or 4" drop. It also comes with a handy carrying bag.
