A trailer axle will have a specific max weight capacity. Then the components like leaf springs, hubs, wheels, and tires will also have individual weight ratings. For instance a 6,000 lbs capacity axle could have hubs rated for 3,600 lbs, springs rated for 3,000 lbs, wheels rated for 3500 lbs and tires rated for 4,400 lbs. In that case the axle and springs would be the restriction at 6,000 lbs capacity. The wheels would be rated higher at 7K for the pair, tires at 8.8k for the pair and hubs at 7.2K for the pair.
It is possible to have an axle and springs rated higher than the hubs, wheels, and tires. In that case the weakest component is the max capacity for the entire axle.
If you have more than one axle, you will simply add the capacities together, but the axles and components do need to match for proper ride or uneven wear and sway can occur as well as other issues.
