Purpose of Springs on Titan Master Cylinder Assembly # T1777405

Updated 05/22/2020 | Published 09/20/2018

Question:

Hello, I recently purchased the master cylinder and am curious about the 2 springs. What purpose do they serve? I dont see how they are doing anything since they are attached to fixed items. Thanks!

The two springs on the outside of the Titan Master Cylinder Assembly # T1777405 that you referenced are actually pretty integral to its operation. What will happen is that the steel (silver colored) bracket that mounts to the coupler housing will move forward from the main assembly when the trailer is being pulled. The springs will then essentially pull the bracket and plunger back into position when applying the brakes in your tow vehicle to release the brake fluid. With this in mind there will really will always be some tension on these springs when you're towing.

Hello, I purchased Titan Master Cylinder Assembly # T1777405 in September of 2018 and it worked well all of last year. Today I towed the boat for the first time and the brakes won't release, in forward and reverse. I can hear the solenoid clicking as soon as I put into reverse so I'm confident it isn't that. The brakes got really hot and blew out the grease seals. Is there a warranty on this product?

Hi Jason. I'm really sorry to hear this. It could definitely be a bad master cylinder but something else that might prevent the brakes from releasing is a foreign object in the cylinder that's blocking flow or a clog somewhere on the lines. You may have already done this, but I would definitely bleed the brakes and drain the system. Let me know if that didn't help and we can go from there.

@ChrisR I ended up cleaning the caliper pins and verified that they aren't locking up. I also pushed new fluid through the system and bled the brakes. I'm wondering if the master cylinder isn't fully releasing. I compress the MC and confirm that the brakes are working. Then I release and it will take several minutes for the wheel to turn freely.

@Josh Thanks for the info. It does sound like this is likely a problem with the master cylinder and that it needs to be replaced. You were able to rule just about everything else out.
