Question:
Hello, I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I’m looking to get some chains to tote around for the occasions where having 4x4 and snow tires isn’t enough according to CalTrans. Can you recommend a low profile chain that’s EASY to install as I’m a woman, and bought my Jeep to avoid this issue haha. Also can you explain what having chains with rim protection means unless it really just means protection for your rims. Thanks!

I am happy to help you with tire chains for your 2018 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Edition for use in California where tire chain requirements vary depending on conditions. The state's three Chain Requirement Levels (R1, R2 and R3) can even call for chains on 4-wheel drive vehicles that have snow tires; this is part of the R2 level.
Tire chains can be selected by determining your specific tire size. Tire size will be molded into the sidewall of your tires, such as 225/65R17. Your 2018 Cherokee can come with several different 17 and 18-inch tire sizes. These are shown on the page I linked for you. If you click on your specific tire size you will see the chains that fits those tires. If your snow tires are a different size you can input their size on the same page.
You'll also want to check your Jeep owner's manual for any cautions about tire chain use. I reviewed the online edition and on pages 231-232 there is important information about chain use relative to certain tire sizes that you'll want to check. The manual states chains should only be used on the front tires, regardless of tire size. Reduced speed (25 to 30-mph) is mandatory for any vehicle on which tire chains are installed.
According to the manual if your 4WD Trailhawk has tire size 225/65R17 on the specific 17 x 7.5-inch ET31 type wheels then chain use is permitted so long as the chain links are not more than 9mm thick.
An excellent choice that meets this requirement is the Pewag Snox Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # PWSXV580 which are 3.2mm. These chains also include rim protection, which consists of plastic bumpers on the chains that simply help keep them from contacting and scratching the rims' finish as you drive. These chains will also automatically center themselves on the tires and automatically adjust their tension for a secure fit, which takes away much of the hassle of installing chains.
The two linked videos on this product will illustrate their features and installation.
