For your 2003 GMC Yukon XL, I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. It is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and use and it offers diagnostics. The P3, # 90195, is a great controller but is geared more towards individual with brake controller experience. It has a lot of diagnostics and features, though and would work well. Both controllers are compatible with electric trailer brake systems as well as electric over hydraulic systems.
For your Yukon XL, you will just need the wiring harness, # 3015-P. If your vehicle came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector, you will not need any other parts. If it did not come with a wiring harness, you will need the 3015-P harness and Replacement Multi-Tow 7-Way and 4-Way Trailer Connector, # 30955.
The 3015-P harness plugs into the brake controller an into a port on the vehicle. The 30955 harness, if needed, plugs into a factory wiring harness located above the spare tire.
I have included links to the installation details for the P2 and a video showing a typical installation of the 3015-P harness.
