Since your 2008 Acura MDX is already equipped with a 4-Way connector, you will just need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7 to convert it to a fully functional 7-Way. This kit includes everything necessary to do this along with the extra wiring and circuit breakers required for installing a trailer brake controller. I have attached the complete installation instructions that you can also take a look at.
Then for the brake controller I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. This is an excellent proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Acura. It features an easy to read digital display, 3 boost levels, and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. The unit is well known for its reliability and ease of use.
I have attached a short video demonstration on the controller and the written manual that you can check out as well.
