How to Carry a Kayak and SUP on a 2003 Subaru Legacy

Updated 08/06/2018 | Published 08/04/2018

Question:

I am looking for a set up to carrier a kayak and possibly a SUP on my 03 Subaru Legacy Wagon. I am planning on purchasing the Malone 50 inch rack that etrailer recommends for the car, but am struggling to decide between the Swagman Contour Rooftop Kayak Carrier System with Tie-Downs - Fixed Arms - J-Style - Universal Mount or the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier with Tie Downs - J-Style - Folding. Will both of these work with my car/rack? Is there an option that would allow me to haul a SUP at the same time? Thanks.

The main difference between the Swagman Contour Rooftop Kayak Carrier System part # S65148 and the Malone DownLoader Kayak Carrier System part # MPG114MD is that the Malone option will allow for the use of the Malone TelosXL Load Assist Module part # MPG351XL which aids in loading. They are essentially the same carrier aside from this aspect. Therefore, if you need help with loading I would go with the Malone system but if not the Swagman system will work fine for you.

They will both work with the Malone SteelTop Roof Rack part # MPG201 or the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack part # MPG215 on your 2003 Subaru Legacy. In order to also carry a SUP I recommend the Malone Deluxe Stand-Up Paddleboard Carrier with Tie-Downs part # MPG171 which comes with everything you need. It may need to be trimmed to work with the kayak carrier

I have attached review videos for you.
