For your 2012 Chevy Silverado, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885. This is an excellent proportional controller that will activate the brakes on your boat trailer at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your truck. It features an easy-to-read digital display, 3 boost settings, and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. This unit is well known for its reliability and ease of use.
If your Silverado is equipped with the factory 7-Way connector, all the needed wires are already run under the dash and it is just a matter of connecting the wiring from the controller to the factory harness. On the controller, the red wire is for the cold side of the brake light switch, the blue wire is for brake output to the 7-Way, the black wire is for 12V power, and the white wire is for ground.
If you don't have the factory 7-Way, then you will just need to also add the Pollak 7-Pole Connector Socket # PK11898 to complete your wiring. If your particular model actually has a round plug with a cap instead of a bundle of wires above the spare tire, you will use # 30955 instead.
I have attached a couple short video demonstrations and the written instructions manual for the Prodigy P2 controller that you can also check out.
