The amp hour life of your batteries would be the deciding factor of how long you can run your lights and electronics. Without knowing the type of battery, I can't really give any idea as to the length of time before they were depleted. For instance, deep cycle batteries will run longer.
To connect two 6 volt batteries to get 12 volt output you will want to connect them in series. If you want to connect 4 batteries, then you would connect two sets in series and then connect the two sets together in parallel. 4 batteries is what you need in this system to get your 12 volts and increase the capacity of the batteries. This capacity increase will help your systems run longer.
I recommend using the Deka 2 gauge # DW04363 and # DW04362 to connect the batteries.
When wired, to charge the batteries and maintain them when not being used, I recommend the CTEK MULTI US 7002 12-Volt Universal Battery Charger w/ Pulse Maintenance # CTEK56353.
