Recommended Replacement for a Shelby 5438 Pop-Up Camper Winch

In order to replace the Shelby Winch 5438 on your pop-up camper, I recommend taking a look at the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL14934. This winch is designed specifically for vertical lifting and lowering. It has a 1,200 lb capacity with a zinc plating for corrosion resistance. It is also made in the U.S.A. and comes with a five year warranty.

This winch is used by other manufacturers on their pop-up campers which is why I find it to be a suitable replacement for you. You will however more than likely need to retrofit the mounting bracket but this will be one of the only options we have for you. You can reuse your existing cable/strap or replace it with either part # DL24045 or part # DL24249.

I see you recommend the DL14934 winch to replace the Shelby 5438 winch. The question I have to ask is, with the different styles of winches will the replacement work to replace the shelby winch because it is located underneath the camper in the middle towards the back so I just want to know how this replacement would work.

The DL14934 should work just fine for a replacement winch for replacing the Shelby 5438.

@JacobH As Todd mentioned the Shelby winch is underneath the pop up camper. I would suspect the handle would hit the camper's bottom. Is there a replacement handle that goes out horizontally until it can clear the camp bottom? Also does the DL14934 support more than one wire?

@JacobH Does the DL14934 support multiple wires? The Shelby 5438 has four wires attached. Also does the DL winch have a replacement handle? As mentioned the existing Shelby winch is under the popup and the handle will most likely hit the bottom of the camper without a horizontal extension.

@IanK I definitely see where you are coming from and I don't think @JacobH fully understood the question which is why he replied saying that it will work. The Dutton-Lainson Winch # DL14934 doesn't have an extension and so unless you can get creative I do believe that the handle will come into contact with the underside of your camper as both you and Todd mentioned. The next best thing I can think of is to use an electric winch like the Bulldog Winch # BDW15008 and finding a place to leave the controller so that it's easy to access. The only thing you'll really want to watch out for is corrosion on those wiring connections. I'd try to come up with some kind of shield to help protect the electric winch.
