On the CURT Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # C11427, for the 2011 Toyota Avalon, the crossbar is under the bumper but underneath the car. The receiver portion is the most visible part of the hitch you will see.
I do not have a picture of the CURT hitch on a 2011 Toyota Avalon, but I am including a link to the instructions on the Draw-Tite Class I 1-1/4 Inch Hitch, part # 24870. The instructions for the Draw-Tite hitch will show a side view drawing of how the hitch will be located on the vehicle. Most brands of hitches for the same year vehicle will end up being positioned the same way on a vehicle after the hitch is installed. This drawing will give you a good indication of how the CURT hitch will be located on your 2011 Toyota Avalon.
I am also including a link to the installation instructions on the CURT hitch.
