Will Timbren Helper Springs Cushion Ride of 2018 Chevy Colorado when Towing with Weight Distribution

Updated 02/19/2018 | Published 02/16/2018

Question:

We have a 2018 Chevy Colorado towing a 23foot travel trailer. 4400 lbs, empty. Tongue weight, 485 lbs. empty. We use a Blue Ox weight distributing hitch with built in sway control, with bars for 750 lb. tongue weight. The truck and trailer are near level and sway control is excellent. The ride, however, is not as smooth as we were expecting. Would these Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancements help even out the ride?

It is possible that the weight distribution system you are using is rated too high for the total tongue weight of the trailer. Total tongue weight is the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle in your 2018 Chevy Colorado. So for example if the trailer tongue weight is 500 pounds and you have 40 pounds of stuff behind the rear axle the total tongue weight would be 540 pounds.

The 750 pound Blue Ox systems are rated for 550 to 750 pounds so in the above scenario the system is rated too high and would lead to a stiff ride.

The addition of helper springs like the Timbren option would not help to cushion the ride. It would actually make it stiffer. Instead, if you choose to go with helper springs, the best option is air bags which will cushion the ride. For your truck you can use Air Lift springs # AL59533.

If you want you can also add a compressor system, # AL25980, so you can add or remove air from the springs from the comfort of the truck cab.
