Does Pilot Hole Size Matter When Replacing 4.8-12 Size Tire and Wheel for Boat Trailer

Updated 01/22/2018 | Published 01/20/2018

Question:

I want to replace a pair of 4.8-12 boat trailer tire/wheels with 5 lugs. I noticed that the Loadmaster Kenda and the Taskmaster tires in this category have different sized pilot diameters 3.19inch and 2.95, respectively. Will both of these wheels fit on to my trailer?

The pilot hole diameter of a wheel is only important when dealing with hub centric wheels, which are more typically found on passenger vehicles. Standard trailer wheels are centered on the lugs, so as long as you match up the bolt pattern, the wheels will fit and operate correctly, regardless of the pilot hole size.

To replace the 4.8-12 size tire, I recommend the Taskmaster 4.8R12 Radial Tire w/ White Spoke Wheel # TA98RR. This radial tire is mounted to a steel, corrosion resistant wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The tire features a maximum load of 990 pounds at 90 psi and an excellent speed rating of 81 mph. I recommend a radial over a bias ply tire because a radial tire will flex more, provide better ground contact and run cooler than a bias alternative, which will all help the tire to achieve a longer lifespan. This particular tire and wheel combo also comes with a 2-year limited warranty.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that you can also take a look at.
