Question:

I recently purchased a 2000 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer Edition and I am looking to tow different trailers, and possibly a travel trailer so I can take my family on road trips. I really know nothing about towing so what can you suggest?

To tow trailers with your 2000 Ford Expedition you will need a trailer hitch, wiring, and a ball mount with a hitch ball.

If you do not already have a trailer hitch then I recommend going with the Curt Class III # C13049. This has a Gross Trailer Weight Rating (GTW) of 6,000 lbs and a Tongue Weight (TW) rating of 600 lbs. When used with a Weight Distribution (WD) system the GTW is increased to 10,000 lbs and the TW is increased to 1,000 lbs. You will want to check your owner's manual for any weight limits or special towing instructions for your Expedition.

A WD system, like part # RP66084, is recommended when the loaded weight of your trailer is more than half of the weight of the tow vehicle. If this is the case for your towing situation let me know and I can help you find the correct WD system.

Since you will be towing different trailers you may be interested in an adjustable ball mount like part # DTALBM6400 which includes locks for security. You can filter through our linked ball mount selection after checking out the attached ball mount article to ensure you get one that works for your application.

If you don't already have a wiring connector on your Expedition then you will need to install the Tekonsha T-One # 118344 which will give you the basic lighting functions for a trailer. If any of your trailers have brakes you will need a 7-Way connector if you don't already have one. For this you will want to use the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. I have attached a video of this being installed on a 2008 Expedition that you can use as a reference.

For a trailer with brakes you will also need a brake controller to activate the brakes. In the video I attached for the # ETBC7 kit it shows the Prodigy P2 # 90885 beng installed with the Plug-In Adapter # 3035-P. I recommend going with brake controller as it is one of the most reliable controllers that we have to offer.
