Question:
I was thinking about ordering a hitch and installing it myself, but saw comments that a strap is needed if I am going to carry bikes 2 bikes at most on hitch rack. Is that on all the hitches for a Scion and which hitch do you recommend?

The Curt Class I Receiver Hitch # C11488 is the only available trailer hitch that is confirmed to fit your 2006 Scion xA. This is a very nice Class I hitch that will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening and a 200 pound tongue weight capacity.
Curt does require that stabilizing straps like # 18050 be used on non-trailer loads such as a bike rack. This is a requirement from Curt on their Class I and Class II (and some Class III) trailer hitch receivers. It is not an indication of the hitch's strength but simply an extra precaution that Curt takes with their trailer hitches. I have attached a short video demonstration on this stabilizing strap so you can see exactly how it will attach to the bike rack and vehicle.
This hitch is custom-fit for your Scion xA, which means that it will use existing holes in the vehicle's frame for a no-drill installation. I have attached the written instructions and a video on the 2005 Scion xA that you can use for reference. The complete hardware kit is included.
If you do not yet have a hitch-mounted bike rack, you will want to make sure you choose one that is compatible with Class I trailer hitches. Also note that the most bikes a Class I hitch can safely support is 2.
I recommend looking at the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack # S64683. This is a great, Class I compatible platform-style bike rack that will secure up to 2 bikes by their top tubes. The sliding wheel cradles will accommodate most bike lengths and the rack can be tilted down for easier rear cargo access.
I have included a video demonstration on this carrier that you can check out, along with a link that will take you to our available selection of Class I compatible bike racks.
