Question:

I have a 2005 Ford F-250 6.0 turbo diesel. Im having problems with the trailer bakes. They work with the trailer hooked but when riding down the road WITHOUT a trailer it keep beeping at me and saying to check trailer hookup or something. Does anyone know what might cause this issue.

I called my contact at Tekonsha and they informed me that you may either have a short in the brake controller wiring harness or there is corrosion inside the trailer connector causing the circuits to short.

The first thing you will want to do is clean out the vehicle side 7-way trailer connector. You can use some electrical cleaner to clean out the pins and some dielectric grease like part # 11755 to seal them while not in use to avoid future mishaps.

If the error signal still occurs after the trailer connector has been cleaned, you will want to start tracing the wires from the brake controller back to their origin while checking for breaks or fray. If any breaks or frays are present you will want to use some electrical tape to cover them.

Once these steps have been completed and the error message is still occurring please let me know and I would be glad to offer further troubleshooting advice.
